Reading/Writing

Books we have been reading together this week are all by the great Eric Carle and are in order as follows:

"The Very Hungry Caterpillar"
 "10 Little Rubber Ducks"

"Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?"

"Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?"
 "The Very Busy Spider"

For "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" we will discuss first what the children already know about caterpillars, butterflies and their process of metamorphises. We will then read the book, and I will give the students opportunity to ask questions. We will then practice our spelling words taken from the book (cocoon, hungry) and using them in sentences. I have also brought in cocooned caterpillars so the children can view first hand, the process of which they go through to change.

"10 Little Rubber Ducks" will be read and discussed. The children will learn how to spell the words duck, wind, sea and seal from this book and understand them for their test at the end of the week. This book will enhance our mathematics lessons as well.

We will read and discuss bother "Brown Bear, Brown Bear.." and "Polar Bear, Polar Bear,..." and compare and contrast Brown Bears and Polar bears and talk about the environment as a part of our science lessons as well. The words bear, zoo, see, and hear will be spelling words on their test as well.

"The Very Busy Spider" will end our week of books by Eric Carle, and we will then learn a little bit about the author himself and why he writes about animals and being outdoors. We will also hopefully have witnessed the caterpillars change to butterflies by the end of the week. You will find a list of all 10 spelling words below.
